Bridging the gap between the yoga you love and everything else your body needs.

Are you already a fan of teachers like Jenni Rawlings, Trina Altman, Brea Johnson and Kathryn Bruni-Young? Maybe you’ve been to a Kinstretch class with Dr. Moses Bernard, or a workshop with Jules Mitchell. Did you take on the #followthedetour challenge, constantly on the lookout for ingenious ways of breathing new life into the same old sun-salutations? Perhaps you stumbled across the Movement Maestro, Shanté Cofield, on Instagram and your views on strength and mobility were forever changed.

Your brain’s now buzzing with all the information you’re exposed to on a daily basis, but you keep getting hung up on one thing: how to reconcile this world of “movement” with your first love — yoga.

Hey there! I’m Cecily.

I know what it’s like to be a teacher looking around the room as students just go through the motions, wishing I knew how to set them on a more embodied trajectory.

And I remember how I put my own yoga instructors and their teachings on a pedestal, never questioning what they asked of me.

I’ll also never forget what it was like to live and work in an injured body, oblivious to the imbalances that my practice was perpetuating.

I was in that state when I found my way onto the gym floor and into seminars with people like Odelia Goldschmidt (Ido Portal), Christopher Sommer (Gymnastic Bodies), Dr. Andreo Spina (FRC, Kinstretch) and Guy Voyer DO (ELDOA). I spent about five years drinking from a firehose, taking in as much information as my brain would absorb while at the same time reevaluating everything about movement and the body that I’d previously taken for face value.

Once my eyes were opened and my perspective expanded, I knew my teaching needed to change but I worried about how this change would be received in my classes. The self-doubt running through my mind seemed endless…

"What happens if I start teaching differently, if I drop the fancy postures and perfect playlists? How will students respond when they show up expecting chaturanga and handstands, and instead get a class all about foot mobility or locomotion? How do I keep calling myself a “yoga teacher” and still share stuff that people don’t consider to be Yoga?"

These questions keep too many of us from teaching authentically, trapped in the fear of what might happen if we decide to venture off the path into unknown territory.

Yoga Detour has created the roadmap for that alternate path.

Detour Method Online provides the foundation needed to move forward with direction, confidence and clarity, creating the bridge between the yoga you love and the other forms of movement and exercise necessary for a balanced practice.

This Course is for you if...
  • You’re looking for the foundation that will take your teaching in a new, exciting direction.
  • You understand that the basics are where it’s at. When we master the basics, our options are limitless.
  • You know that yoga isn’t the only thing our bodies need to feel and stay healthy.
  • You want to offer your students more “movement” but lack the tools and confidence to venture outside the yoga box.
  • You’ve been inspired by all the awesomeness currently swirling around the internet about CARs, mobility vs. flexibility, old-fashioned yoga cues and dogmatic teaching but you’re not sure where to start.
  • You want to practice yoga and/or teach it in a way that is informed, sustainable, and FUN.
This Course is NOT for you if...
  • You aren’t interested in infusing your practice or teaching with information that might contradict what you’ve been previously taught from other yoga instructors.
  • You’re not interested in deviating from a set sequence of postures.
  • You’d rather not focus on the fundamentals.
  • You already feel super confident in your teaching, have spent countless hours studying with other instructors from multiple disciplines and feel skeptical that you can benefit from this program.
  • You’re looking for a practice-along series of classes – this ain’t that.
  • You prefer to learn for free off platforms like Instagram.

“The biggest takeaway is the Isolate-Activate-Integrate approach to teaching. It has become almost second nature to think of prep/activations for yoga poses. I can’t plan a class without them now, even when I’ve tried (out of laziness) to skip them, they find their way in there!

– Emily, DMO April 2020

Leaving the training I felt liberated from the strict guidelines of movement within the yoga sphere and I now sequence and cue with more attention to the intention of the movement/pose. Can’t wait to continue to learn and move with the Detour community!

– Shanèl, DMO April 2020

“DMO bridges the gaps I feel that most 200 YTT trainings leave out. DMO enables you to question things you thought you already knew and it enables you to feel empowered to come to your own conclusions without being told what is right or wrong.”

MODULE 1: Yoga Detour Foundations

If you’re looking for a quick fix of the Detour approach, this is it. We cover the key pillars of an informed practice, giving you a taste of all the good stuff:

  • Four ways to the move the spine that will keep it healthy for life
  • The one “core” exercise we never compromise on
  • How to bulletproof your forward bends
  • What your shoulders are dying to tell you they need, and how to give this to them in every class

You’ll integrate everything covered in this module to create the sun-salutations of your dreams, moving with the kind of strength and purpose that your body has been longing for!

MODULE 2: Get Grounded
Applying Lower Body Strength and Mobility to an Integrated Asana Practice

If you love standing postures and never want to part with your forward bends, this is the module for you. In it we explore:

  • How to build lasting strength and mobility
  • How to mitigate nagging hamstring pain
  • Why our hips are crying out for help (and come to their rescue)
  • Progressions to revolutionize your ankles, knees and hips

We’ll look at how to apply this information to standing postures, teaching you our tried, tested and true approach to breaking things down into their component parts, showing you how to design classes that are not only more accessible, but also hotbeds of ‘ah-ha’ moments.

MODULE 3: Lift-Off
Applying Upper Body Strength and Mobility to an Integrated Asana Practice
Untitled design

We leave no stone unturned when it comes to everything upper body:

  • Why upper body strength is illusive for so many of us
  • Non-negotiable wrist-prep
  • How to access key muscle groups that will have your backbends, arm-balances and inversions feeling like totally different poses (in the best way possible)
  • How to make any upper-body focused practice accessible and enjoyable for all levels

By the end of this module you’ll apply what you’ve learned to the art of sequencing, discovering endless possibilities for planning your self-practice and/or your classes.

MODULE 4: Floor Play
Rediscovering Your Practice from the Ground Up

This module embraces play and unstructured movement. It’s also the perfect antidote to a practice that’s only known the confines of a yoga mat or the rigidity of a set sequence. Dive into:

  • Our favourite ways to use the ground as a resource when it comes to building strength and enhancing mobility
  • The YD approach to seated postures (without having to sit still)
  • Using locomotion to differentiate your classes
  • The best ways to help yourself and your students tap into down-regulation and nervous system relaxation

We’ll cap things off by constructing an entire class that will have any level of practitioner tapping into curiosity beyond their comfort zone, feeling simultaneously challenged and cared for.

This course is jam-packed. We present the information in a way that is totally digestible but we want to make sure you don’t get bogged down. That’s why we’ll take a week “off” in between Module 2 and 3, where you can take time to absorb what’s been covered and play a bit of catch up. Your success is our priority, and we believe that a little R+R goes a long way in that process.

Four modules reinforce the central pillars of the Detour method. Each module contains four different lessons that layer on the knowledge-bombs, one step at a time. We’ll cover one module per week (with the exception of Integration Week).

Each lesson includes professionally-shot video content as well as checks for understanding to ensure you’re keeping up along the way. We also guide you through four (optional) culminating assessments that will carry over directly into your personal practice and teaching.

From the moment the course begins, you’ll have access to the private Detour Learning Forum, a space exclusive to those who are enrolled in this training. Ask questions and engage with those immersed in this journey alongside you.

Engage in four live calls where Cecily and the YD team will tie together the elements of each week’s theme and provide opportunity for Q+A using the Zoom webinar platform. They’ll also review assessments and provide feedback.

FREE ACCESS TO THE DETOUR VIRTUAL STUDIO until the end of the year. In the DVS, you can practice with Registered Yoga Detour™ Instructors from all over the world and experience a unique approach to Detour inspired classes that are creative without being overly complex, and strong while still being accessible.

THREE AUDIO-CLASSES led by Cecily covering different aspects of the practice (sun salutations, lower body strength and backbends). These classes will do wonders to help you see how the “non-yoga” material can be seamlessly integrated into a flow-style practice.

FOUR Detour Maps (one per module) – downloadable guides for crafting sequences out of the material covered in this course. These maps will tie everything together! In the past, students have claimed they made all the difference in helping them connect the dots with this work.

“Talk about filling the gap! This course will connect what you already know with the answers you were missing to bring your teaching to the next level. Cecily and the DMO team make this course about you.

As an experienced teacher, DMO left me feeling empowered with the knowledge I gained, complementing the foundation I already had – not to mention the fantastic sense of community Cecily creates through the private forum and live calls.”

– Lizette, DMO November 2019

“DMO is one of, if not the best online course I have taken and I have done many. Right from the outset I was impressed with the content, layout, community and support via the Facebook group and email if needed.

The assessment at the end of each module was a great way to put everything you had just learnt into practice and it also helped solidify and reaffirm some of the ways that I had already been teaching and approaching asana.”

– Kylie, DMO November 2019

“DMO is a step in the right direction for me, not only because of the sheer quality and quantity of the information presented but also because of the community that has built around the course and for giving me a direct line of communication with Cecily and her team.

We have been prompted to ask why stuff happens, within our practice and outside, and having a worldwide community will be of much help for figuring stuff out from now on.

“Cecily was the perfect guide during the transitional moment I was having as a yoga teacher. (YD is like FRC for postural yoga). In fact, Detour Method Online was a missing piece to the puzzle that is being a yoga teacher. And don’t get me wrong, that puzzle is never complete. It’s a learning & growing thing that never ends. And- yes, I still absolutely love being a yoga teacher.”

– Zuri, DMO November 2018

“In the Detour Method Online training, we were introduced to mapping out peak poses or themes for our classes – really breaking everything down into its smallest components. And then puzzling it all back together into a cohesively flowing class. Game changer!”

“As a result of DMO, I feel totally inspired again. The best thing about this program is the combination of a super solid foundation for the creation of a safe and sustainable practice as well as the tools to make it our own so that growth and evolution continue well beyond the end of the class. Best decision I’ve made for my teaching and my own body, and I’ll be forever grateful.”

I’m not a yoga teacher - can I still take this course?

YES! We’ve designed this course with both students and teachers in mind. As a practitioner, you’ll benefit from the many lessons that focus on waking up different areas of the body, giving you new material to integrate into your normal practice or routine. The checks for understanding along the way will help to ensure that you’re not just going through the motions – you’ll actually know WHY you’re doing things a certain way and how you can continue to progress through these movements in a way that is best for your body.

I’ve been teaching for ages. Will I learn anything new from this course?

That’s going to depend on a) what you’re looking for and b) what you’ve already done. If you’ve been immersed in non-yoga trainings in the past and have already learned how to integrate mobility training, strength work and non-linear movement into your classes, then you likely already know much of what we’re offering here. But if you’re relatively new to the movement world, with most of your experience coming from 200HR and 300HR teacher trainings, then YES – you need this training. Even if you are somewhat familiar with the “other stuff” like FRC and Yoga Tune-Up, this course will help you figure out how to weave everything together in a way that is authentic and informed.

When does the next 2020 course start?

The live component of the course starts on Monday, October 19th and we wrap everything up by November 20th, 2020.

All modules will be released on Friday’s at noon ET to allow for an advance access to the weekly material. Work through it at your own pace.

Live Calendar:

Module 1 is released on October 16th and starts on October 19th.

Module 2 is released on October 23rd and starts on October 26th.

The week of November 2nd is an integration week where you can get caught up on anything that may have been missed, and use the time to integrate and absorb all that we’ve covered so far.

Module 3 is released on November 6th and starts on November 9th

Module 4 is released on November 13th and starts on November 16th.

What if I can't keep up with the course pace?

Fear not! You’ll continue to have access to the online course content for as long as it exists (aka forever). Everything downloadable is yours to keep. The live calls will all be recorded, so even if you miss those it’s not a big deal. If you aren’t able to turn in the assessments during the live session, we’ll give you until the end of the month to submit anything you want feedback on.

Please note that to be eligible to call yourself a Detour-Informed Teacher and add a listing to the Detourist Global Directory you will need to submit all four assessments by December 18th, 2020.

What are the minimum system requirements to access course materials?

This course is based on videos that are hosted at and while these may work on older setups, we strongly recommend keeping your system as up to date as possible. Browsers and operating systems are constantly releasing bug fixes, security updates, and improvements, and using the latest browser version can always help to prevent issues.

Supported Browsers

If you’re using an older browser, system, or website, you’ll need to upgrade to continue watching Vimeo videos.

Here is a list of our supported browsers/versions:

  • Chrome 30+ (has automatic updates)
  • Firefox 27+ (has automatic updates)
  • Internet Explorer 11
  • Microsoft Edge
  • Safari 9+

Supported Operating Systems

The Vimeo player operates in a wide range of operating systems, but we can only guarantee full functionality on systems that are still being supported by their proprietors.

  • Microsoft has ended support for Windows XP and Windows Vista.
  • The earliest version of MacOS is still receiving extended support from Apple is Sierra (v. 10.12.6), and support for it is rumoured to end in September 2019.
  • Earlier versions of MacOS (El Capitan, Yosemite, Mavericks, etc) are not supported.

  • Android (Lollipop) version 5.0+
  • iOS version 9.3.5+

Internet Connection Requirements

A minimum stable speed of 5 Mbps or faster is required to stream high-quality videos on the Internet. For optimal performance, a hardwired connection via Ethernet is best, but if you prefer to use WiFi, be sure that your router is configured correctly and that your network is not being shared with other devices (this can limit the starting speeds you pay your Internet Service Provider for).

Not sure what speeds your device is receiving? Visit (on mobile or desktop) for an estimate. We recommend performing this test a few times since bandwidth can change.

What time are the live learning sessions and how do they work?

We’ll go live on Zoom every Thursday of the course at 9am EST. All calls are recorded so don’t worry if you have to miss one here and there!

Each week you’ll receive a link that will take you directly to the call – all you need to do is plug it into your browser at the time of the session. Together we’ll review the key take-aways from that week’s module, after which you’ll have the chance to raise your hand and get answers to any questions you’ve got about that week’s materials.

And if the live calls don’t work for you, fret not! You can still ask all your questions in the private Facebook Think Tank and watch the call recordings whenever it’s convenient.

What's the time commitment each week? Can I go through each module at my own pace?

Plan to watch one lesson per day (videos average 12-40min), saving some time on the side for the little exercises we give you along the way. The culminating assessment at the end of each module can be completed in 1-2 hours depending on your learning style. Our live sessions (60-90min) will take place once a week, so with all being said and done you’re looking at about 4-6 hours of time per week.

We welcome you to use this training in a way that will work with your schedule. You will have access to the video content for as long as it exists and everything downloadable is yours to keep. The private learning forum can be accessed at any time, and the live sessions will all be recorded and downloadable should you not have the chance to participate in person. Culminating assessments can be submitted for feedback anytime before December 18th, 2020.

I learn best through one-on-one interaction. Will I have direct access to Cecily in this training?

You will have direct access with Cecily as well as the opportunity to interact with members of the Detour team. DMO Team Leaders will be moderating the private learning forum and providing feedback on assessments.

Is this training eligible for CECs?

Yes. As of June 2019 DMO is eligible to receive Continuing Education Credits (CECs) through canfitpro.

DMO is also eligible for Yoga Australia Continuing Development points.

Will I receive a certificate for this training?

Yes once you’ve completed all four modules and your assessments have been reviewed successfully, you will receive a digital certificate of completion. Keep in mind that this is not a teacher training program or YTT, so you will not receive a certificate to teach.

If you wish to receive feedback on assignments from the team you’ll need to submit all 4 (one per module) assignments by Friday, December 18th.

Please note that to be eligible to call yourself a Detour-Informed Teacher and add a listing to the Detourist Global Directory all assessments will have to be reviewed first.

How often will this training run?

The Detour Method Online Training will run twice a year – once in the Fall (October – November), and again the following Spring (March – April).

Do I need to do anything to prepare for this course in advance?

You can do absolutely nothing to prepare for this course and still benefit a ton! That being said, what you get out of something is often a reflection of what you put into it. If you want to get your head in the game, we recommend the following resources:

What currency is the price in?

Pricing currency depends on location. If you are purchasing from outside of Canada, the cost is in USD. If you are purchasing within Canada, from Australia or New Zealand the cost is in CAD.
