Detour Method Online will show you how to combine the yoga practice you love with a world-class education in movement and mobility.
DMO fills the gaps left behind by most 200HR trainings. In this program, you'll gain the tools needed to experience asana practice through a whole new lens—one where creativity, accessibility and strength are celebrated!
Each module of DMO will help you re-discover yoga postures (asana) to turn your practice into a strong, sustainable, and pain-free celebration of strength and mobility.
Imagine sun salutations where your shoulders don't collapse in chaturanga. Experience how freeing it is when your lower back feels good in upward-facing dog. See what it's like to fire up your posterior chain (aka your glutes and hamstrings) to forever change the game in standing postures. Banish "yoga butt"—proximal hamstring tendinopathy forever!
Discover just how empowering it is to create a foundation of upper body strength that not only lets you go upside-down (hello handstands and arm balances!) but also transforms the way your shoulders, neck, and upper back feel every day, no matter what life throws at them.
Liberate your practice from the confines of your mat. Move outside the lines and embrace a sense of play. In DMO, we uncover magic through exploration and experiential learning. You'll walk away with a renewed appreciation for all that's possible through the power of intentional practice.
While this course is designed for yoga instructors, anyone with a body and a curious mind will benefit. Throughout each module, we'll challenge you to think critically, revisit commonly accepted cues, and examine the ways in which conventional approaches to movement have let people down in terms of inaccessibility and misinformation.
From beginning to end, you'll receive individualized support and feedback that rewards what you already know while nurturing your untapped potential as a world-class educator. DMO will equip you with the knowledge to keep your classes fresh and your students injury-free.
As humans first, educators second, we believe in creating learning environments where it’s OK to question everything and still feel supported along the way.
We also know what it’s like to live and work in injury-riddled bodies. DMO is a reflection of the research, unlearning and relearning that allowed us to arrive at a place where physical movement provides nourishment, not punishment. We’re grateful to our global community of Detourists like you who crave an alternate path of renewed inspiration.

Detour Method Online has moved to a modular course format.
The first course Module One: Foundations runs from Monday, February 13th to Sunday, February 19th, 2023. You will have one full week to complete the module and submit your assignment for review.
The live call with Cecily is scheduled for Thursday, February 16th 10am-12pm PT / 1pm-3pm ET. The call will be recorded and available to download for 30 days after the course end date.
The time commitment will depend on your schedule and learning style. Some students prefer to schedule a day devoted to DMO learning while others like to spread the learning out over a couple days. That said, you’ll have one full week to get through the content and submit the course assignment for feedback from Cecily.
For those who move through online content at a brisk pace, you can expect to spend 4-6 hours reviewing course content, looking at additional resources, watching or listening to the live call and practicing along with audio classes and the Detour Virtual Studio. If you prefer to take things in more leisurely, you might spend closer to 8+ hours with this material. Keep in mind that your access to the content never expires. If you don't get to it all in one week, everything will still be there waiting for you.
Pricing currency depends on location. If you are purchasing from outside of Canada, the cost is in USD. If you are purchasing within Canada, or from Australia or New Zealand, the cost is in CAD.
Course content is presented through pre-recorded videos streaming from Vimeo to our Canvas platform. Because DMO is built using web standards, Canvas runs on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, or any other device with a modern web browser. For best performance, Canvas should be accessed using the most up-to-date version of Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari. Verify that the browser you are currently using is up to date here: https://updatemybrowser.org/
We recommend using a computer with at least 1GB of RAM and having access to a minimum stable speed of 5 Mbps or faster in order to stream the high quality videos. Visit https://testmy.net/download (on mobile or desktop) to get an estimate for how fast your internet speed is running. We recommend performing this test a few times since bandwidth can change.
Nope! The private DMO Think Tank is housed on Mighty Networks, which means you won’t get sucked into the void of social media while trying to connect with peers in the course.
If you change your mind or discover that this course really isn’t what you need right now, we get it. We also know that life happens, and that circumstances can arise to keep you from participating in this training in the way you first imagined. That’s why we stand by our policy to refund you within 48 hours of the start of the course, no questions asked.
No, and that's because we've made the decision not to be accredited with Yoga Alliance.
If you're curious, here's an article Cecily wrote about Yoga Alliance and why we don't align with them, as well as an IG post.
YES! We’ve designed each course with both students and teachers in mind. As a practitioner, you’ll benefit from the many lessons that focus on waking up different areas of the body, giving you new material to integrate into your normal practice or routine. The checks for understanding along the way will help to ensure that you’re not just going through the motions – you’ll actually know WHY you’re doing things a certain way and how you can continue to progress through these movements in a way that is best for your body.
The Canvas interface was optimized for desktop displays, so using devices with smaller screens such as phones may not provide as pleasant an experience. While it is possible to access the course on phones and tablets (in landscape mode) when running the most recent version of Safari (iOS) and Chrome (Android) on your mobile device, we encourage you to use a laptop or desktop computer when possible.
That’s going to depend on a) what you’re looking for and b) what you’ve already done. If you’ve been immersed in non-yoga trainings in the past and have already learned how to integrate mobility training, strength work and non-linear movement into your classes, then you likely already know much of what we’re offering here. But if you’re relatively new to the movement world, with most of your experience coming from 200HR and 300HR teacher trainings, then YES – you need this training. Even if you are somewhat familiar with the “other stuff” like FRC and Yoga Tune-Up, this course will help you figure out how to weave everything together in a way that is authentic and informed.
Cecily of course! She will lead you through pre-recorded videos with Jenn by her side demonstrating all things movement along the way. The Detour Maps and Audio Classes were also created by Cecily. The Workbook Answer Key that accompanies the questions posed throughout each module is a collaboration between Cecily, Jenn, our resident anatomy hero, Drew Hume and Detour graduate Robin Hurlow.
You will receive a certificate of participation once you complete all four modules in the program including submitting the module assignments for review which is a requirement to attend this course.
Keep in mind that this is not a teacher training program or a YTT, so you will not receive a certificate to teach.
Please note that to be eligible to call yourself a Detour-Informed Teacher and add a listing to the Detourist Global Directory all course assignments will need to be submitted and reviewed by Cecily.
If you’re a self-employed yoga teacher/movement instructor/coach you should be able to expense the cost of this course. We will provide you with an official sales receipt for your records.
