Detour Method Online is an online course that will show you how to Detour from conventional asana practice. Through four in-depth video modules, you'll learn to combine the yoga practice you love with a world-class education in movement and mobility.
DMO fills the gaps left behind by most 200HR trainings so that you can forge ahead of the pack and serve your students in a way no other instructor can.
Take a deep-dive into the mechanics of movement. We'll start with an examination of the spine and core that will have you reevaluating what "ab work" really looks like. You'll then apply the Detour approach of "Isolate-Activate-Integrate" to upper and lower body strength and mobility.
Learn why your hip flexors crave loading vs. stretching, as well as what will make your hamstrings perform better than ever. Experience an approach to upper body strength that will have arm balances and inversions feeling like they're finally within reach, and see what it's like to take movement off the mat in a way that's playful, exploratory and non-dogmatic.
As a result, your confidence will grow exponentially—both as a practitioner and a teacher.
While this course is designed for yoga instructors, anyone with a body and a curious mind will benefit. Throughout each module you'll be challenged to think critically, revisit commonly accepted cues, and examine the ways in which conventional approaches to movement have let people down in terms of inaccessibility and misinformation.
From beginning to end, you'll receive individualized support and feedback that rewards what you already know while nurturing your untapped potential as a world class educator. DMO will equip you with the knowledge to keep your classes fresh and your students injury-free.
As humans first, educators second, we believe in creating learning environments where it’s OK to question everything and still feel supported along the way.
We also know what it’s like to live and work in injury-riddled bodies. DMO is a reflection of the research, unlearning and relearning that allowed us to arrive at a place where physical movement provides nourishment, not punishment. We’re grateful to our global community of Detourists like you who crave an alternate path of renewed inspiration.

The program runs from May 2nd to June 24th, 2022. You will have two weeks to complete each module (4 total). Live calls are scheduled on Thursdays: May 5th + 19th, June 2nd 16th from 1-2:30pm ET (Toronto time). All calls will be recorded and available to download for 30 days after the program ends.
The first week of each module will include access to new video content and supplementary resources, as well as, a 90-minute live call with Cecily and the team. While the second week will be devoted to completing the required assigment for submission to be assessed by a Team Leader. The next live cohort will not run again until Spring 2023.
The time commitment per week will depend on your schedule and learning style. Some students prefer to schedule a day devoted to DMO learning while others like to spread the learning out over a couple days. That said, you’ll have 8-weeks to get through the course to receive feedback on the 4 course assignments.
Here's a breakdown of the average time it takes students to complete module one:
4 videos = 2 hours
Required assignment = 1 - 2 hours
Optional quiz = 10 minutes
Optional DVS classes = 1 hour
Optional supplementary resources = 2.5 hours
Optional additional resources = 1 hour
You will also never lose access to the content—you retain access to the entire course indefinitely.
Pricing currency depends on location. If you are purchasing from outside of Canada, the cost is in USD. If you are purchasing within Canada, or from Australia or New Zealand, the cost is in CAD.
Course content is presented through pre-recorded videos streaming from Vimeo to our Canvas platform. Because DMO is built using web standards, Canvas runs on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, or any other device with a modern web browser. For best performance, Canvas should be accessed using the most up-to-date version of Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari. Verify that the browser you are currently using is up to date here: https://updatemybrowser.org/
We recommend using a computer with at least 1GB of RAM and having access to a minimum stable speed of 5 Mbps or faster in order to stream the high quality videos. Visit https://testmy.net/download (on mobile or desktop) to get an estimate for how fast your internet speed is running. We recommend performing this test a few times since bandwidth can change.
Nope! The private DMO Think Tank is housed on Mighty Networks, which means you won’t get sucked into the void of social media while trying to connect with peers in the course.
If you change your mind or discover that this course really isn’t what you need right now, we get it. We also know that life happens, and that circumstances can arise to keep you from participating in this training in the way you first imagined. That’s why we stand by our policy to refund you within 14 days of your registration date, no questions asked.
If, after those initial 14 days, something changes and you’re not able to complete the course work within the 8-week period, extensions may be granted on a case-by-case basis. Please note that extensions longer than one week may be subject to an additional fee.
No, and that's because we've made the decision not to be accredited with Yoga Alliance.
If you're curious, here's an article Cecily wrote about Yoga Alliance and why we don't align with them, as well as an IG post.
YES! We’ve designed this course with both students and teachers in mind. As a practitioner, you’ll benefit from the many lessons that focus on waking up different areas of the body, giving you new material to integrate into your normal practice or routine. The checks for understanding along the way will help to ensure that you’re not just going through the motions – you’ll actually know WHY you’re doing things a certain way and how you can continue to progress through these movements in a way that is best for your body.
The Canvas interface was optimized for desktop displays, so using devices with smaller screens such as phones may not provide as pleasant an experience. While it is possible to access the course on phones and tablets (in landscape mode) when running the most recent version of Safari (iOS) and Chrome (Android) on your mobile device, we encourage you to use a laptop or desktop computer when possible.
That’s going to depend on a) what you’re looking for and b) what you’ve already done. If you’ve been immersed in non-yoga trainings in the past and have already learned how to integrate mobility training, strength work and non-linear movement into your classes, then you likely already know much of what we’re offering here. But if you’re relatively new to the movement world, with most of your experience coming from 200HR and 300HR teacher trainings, then YES – you need this training. Even if you are somewhat familiar with the “other stuff” like FRC and Yoga Tune-Up, this course will help you figure out how to weave everything together in a way that is authentic and informed.
Cecily will lead you through pre-recorded videos with Jenn by her side demonstrating all things movement along the way. The Detour Maps and Audio Classes were also created by Cecily. The Workbook Answer Key that accompanies the questions posed throughout each module is a collaboration between Cecily, Jenn, our resident anatomy hero, Drew Hume and Detour graduate Robin Hurlow.
Cecily and the Team Leaders will be active in the online discussion space. When you register, you will be assigned to a Team Leader who becomes your mentor throughout the training. The Team Leaders are all Registered Yoga Detour Instructors and will provide direct feedback on your submitted assignments.
You will received a certificate of participation once you complete all four modules in the course including submitting the module assignments for review which is a requirement to attend this course.
Keep in mind that this is not a teacher training program or a YTT, so you will not receive a certificate to teach.
Please note that to be eligible to call yourself a Detour-Informed Teacher and add a listing to the Detourist Global Directory all assignments will have to be reviewed by your Team Leader.
If you’re a self-employed yoga teacher/movement instructor/coach you should be able to expense the cost of this course. We will provide you with an official sales receipt for your records.
