Welcome to Detour Method Online!
This experience will build your understanding, capacity and confidence to practice embodied movement. Before you get started we suggest reviewing all the tabs in your digital binder below. You will find they contain a lot of useful information to support your learning journey.
- Gain confidence teaching from a bottomless toolbox of movement options: techniques, exercises and tasks that will bridge the gap between yoga and everything else the body needs for a balanced practice.
- Understand the foundation for those techniques: key concepts including progressive overload, nervous system conditioning and the importance of control through full range of motion.
- Demystify the world of strength training through approachable, progressive programming.
- Understand the Detour approach of “isolate, activate, integrate”.
- Develop fluency in “mapping your Detour”, structuring personal practice or classes with a sense of confidence, intelligence and ingenuity.

Live calls will also be scheduled as events in the Facebook Think Tank. If you can’t make the call live, it will be recorded and shared with you afterward to download.

Check out what time that is in your part of the world here.
We’ve included self study questions as checks for understanding throughout each module (these are NOT reviewed by Team Leaders). These questions will appear underneath the video window for each lesson. You’ll be asked to answer the questions in succession throughout the video, as they each relate to the content being taught on screen—but that doesn’t mean all the answers to these questions are IN the videos. We’re asking you to connect the dots for yourself, do some critical thinking and perhaps additional research to fill in any gaps in understanding.
Once you complete an answer be sure to click “Save My Workbook”. These questions are not reviewed but we encourage you to take the time to reflect on them as you move through the course. This workbook can be downloaded as a PDF at the completion of each video.
At the end of each module we’ll present you with a culminating assessment. These assessments are meant to get you thinking for yourself using the course content as a resource to expand your understanding and apply it to your own practice or teaching. One of our Team Leaders (grads of DMO and Registered Yoga Detour™ Instructors) will review these assessments and provide feedback.
Don’t forget to review the DMO Assessment Submission Checklist before submitting your work. We suggest downloading a copy for quick reference as you’ll be prompted to review it often.
An important part of the learning experience is the community of peers you will be building. At the end of each lesson, we’ll prompt you to visit the DMO Facebook Think Tank group. The Facebook group will be a hotbed of dialogue. It’s the place to discuss course materials, concepts and teaching techniques relevant to what you’re seeing here. Post questions, answer questions and share your experiences.
To access the discussion group, click here: DMO Facebook Think Tank group
(don’t forget to use the password that we sent you in the welcome email).
We look forward to interacting with you!
Course Completion and Certificate:
After the last day of your live session, you’ll retain access to all online course materials for as long as you like. Once all modules have been completed you’ll receive a Detour Method Online digital certificate of completion (we fully endorse printing it out and making some room on the fridge!).
Please note that in order to call yourself a Detour-Informed Teacher and register a listing on the Global Directory you’ll need to submit all four assessments for feedback within a month of the live course ending.
You will have access to the video content forever and the downloadable resources are all yours to keep.
For the best digital experience we strongly suggest using Google Chrome to access the course platform and view the downloadable resources.
To view video content, all you need is a device (desktop, laptop, tablet, phone) connected to the internet. If you are on mobile, we suggest connecting to WiFi to avoid data overage and sluggish video streaming.
